As I've been failing to get a part time job since I came back (probably because I forgot polite Japanese?), I have nothing to do but woodworking. Three years in R.C. made me no longer available to accustom myself to "weird" Japanese business culture, which is fine. F*** it all.
Anyway, I found in a book a lovely dining chair, which designed by danish designer Bernt Petersen. Since I want a dining chair in my house and most likely dining chairs are easier to sell than cabinets, I decided to build one for practice. The feature of this chair design is twisted rear legs, which makes seamless transition to back rest.
This is not a mock-up just for the chair but for any dining chair I'll make in the future. The angle and length of stretcher are adjustable. It's now used in my house to test settings.
Then I went to IKEA to check the dimension commonly used in manufacturers. Geez they have put tags with dimension to every single piece, even pencil and paper for jotting. I was thinking of measuring with my hand and arm. I bought bowls for the compensation, which were under $1. Thanks!
Although there's no mortising machine here, there's no use starting chair making now, until I get a lethal weapon for hectic joinery work. While I'm waiting for it, I started making bookshelf for me. It's unexpectedly time consuming. Why on earth did I decided to put applied edges on it which is just a temp furniture? Self satisfaction, most likely.

That's funny. I was going to do that chair last year until I got sidetracked. I really like that one. Can you explain further how you mock-up works? You're really on to something with the idea od a modular mock-up. Then you can have customers sit in it, and then change it and say, "or do you like this better?"
haha "weird" japanese business culture aye? ive always wanted to go and visit japanese just to soak in all the weird goings on there. im sure you see it in a different light though!
whats this leather joinery weapon you speak of? the festool domino? hehe
hey Ian, it's nothing more than the mock ups we made at school, here I use nuts and bolts instead of many clamp, except back rest part. Just because the number of clamp is quite limited.
Nick, nice try. You'll see what it is in the next post!
I like the look of that dining chair. What's the name the book that that has the picture of the chair?
It's "Danish Chairs" by Noritsugu Oda, you can still purchase it at Amazon.
