There's most of the stuff I need in the shop, except a few: a horizontal mortiser, an assistant, and saw horses. I can't afford the first two so I made saw horses.
One set is already there, though I need two sets to cross cut a plank with hand saw. And it's always good to have extra pieces for anything. I decided to make 2 sets (4 horses), high one and low one. Last time I made 4 pieces it took 4 days in IP, I wondered how fast I would do this time.
Well, the milling took almost a half day, including the story stick. Even white ash I suspect a fair amount of warp. I wish I could have read wood movement. As for story sticks Buddhist altar (or cabinet) makers in Kyoto use them instead of drawings. It seems the idea of using sticks has spread to the both side of the continent. Who invented?
Now a messy part came. The band saw worked so good that the longer tenons fit just off the saw. 2 days have gone.
The day 3. Glue up was a bit hassle because of wedged tenons. I didn't make bottom tenons have wedges as they have enough glue surface. Who the heck can break that large (2"x2") live(!) tenon in the usual use? In the school we put wedges to all tenons for the purpose of education, which will torment this years students soon if they make full size horses.
Done. Making horses doesn't excite me anymore, too bad. I made 2 horses in the first year of the school, 6 in the third year, now I've 10 over all.
Now it's drawing time.

i thought you said you weren't going to draw anymore, just story sticks!
i take it your making a danish inspired chair next, or maybe a whole bunch of them to go around your sawhorse dining table.
can't wait to see what you'll come up with.
heh nice desk sir.
My guess is that "story sticks" may have pre-dated written language. Think of the cultures that built amazing things with no writing!
I need some floating ducks! I also want to build horses. What was the final time on those for you?
yeah i gotta make myself about 4 more of these, they are SO handy!
Heh heh I just changed my mind, Jacques. I going to make Bernt Petersen's dining chair for practical use. Simple but not so easy.
It took 2days and a half, Nick N. Not so bad but can be faster.
why not mass-produce them Nick B?
